Davis Hoops Wildcats Q & A
Q: How are teams selected? See "Tryout Info" tab above for more info!
A: Tryouts are held once a season for all teams. Elementary and Junior High school teams usually begin in early October. High school teams begin in March. Each team holds at least two tryout sessions, and players are encouraged to attend as many as they can. If a team has openings, tryouts may occur during the season as well.
Players are selected based on a number of criteria. Some talented players may not be chosen because a team, for example, might not need 5 point guards. The number of teams in a specific age division depends on the number of coaches available. Last season, almost all grade levels had two teams with between 8 and 10 players per team.

Q: Where are games played?
A: Most teams play two tournaments a month, often at Rocklin’s Hardwood Palace or various locations in the Sacramento region. Teams often schedule scrimmages in Davis/Dixon and try to host at least one local tournament as well. One or two tournaments each season may be as far away as Lodi or the Bay Area. Older elementary and junior high teams have played in Reno, Tahoe and Santa Cruz. Last year the high school boys and girls competed in Las Vegas.
Q: Who are the coaches?
A: Davis Hoops coaches are selected from individuals who have demonstrated knowledge of the game, passed reference checks and successfully completed our Coaching Licensure Course and AAU’s Positive Coaching Alliance. Many of our coaches are associated with local junior high or high school teams as well. Davis Hoops coaches acknowledge their role as teachers and are encouraged to create a positive learning environment. Prospective coaches may contact our Vice Presidents (see Club Contacts).
Q: What about practices?
A: Practices are held twice a week--though on tournament weekends, teams might only practice once. Gyms used for practices include junior high and high schools in Davis, Dixon and Woodland. Practice schedules are posted by the 1st day of each month, however days and times might vary each month due to the schools having first priority for gym time. Most weeknight practices run 90 minutes to 2 hours, starting after 5:30 and ending by 9:00 pm. While we attempt to schedule practices mainly on weeknights, weekend practices are also a possibility. During Winter season, junior high school teams will practice only on weekends until their school season is completed. Parents should check the web calendar regularly for updates and changes.
Q: What are the costs involved?
A: Player fees include Registration, Uniforms and Tournaments.
Registration for the 2012-2013 season varies depending on lenght of season and age group. The range is $175 for 4th grade to $510 for High School Boys. All players are required to join AAU, the membership fee is $14. The registration fee is non-refundable and covers administrative costs, coaching stipends, gym rentals, equipment, scholarships, AAU fees and insurance.
Uniforms are $145 and include a reversible jersey, undershirt, shooting shirt, shorts and a nice backpack with players last name embroidered on it.
All new players will be required to purchase a uniform. We will be using the same uniform from 2011/12 season.
Tournament fees will be collected upfront with the registration fees. The tournament fees average about $100 per player for elementary teams and up to $200 for older teams for the entire season. These fees do not include lodging or travel costs (though most teams don't travel out of the area).
The cost of tournaments can be offset by team fundraising activities. Past events include free throw-a-thons, car washes, See's candy sales and raffles.
A limited number of scholarships are available, which usually cover a portion of the registration fee only. Contact Karen Ward, Director of Operations for more info on fees or scholarship requests.
